Il sottomarino Nautilus

 

Quasi l'intera racconto verte sul tema della navigazione. Per quanto riguarda navi e mercantili, come la fregata americana Abraham Lincoln (con la quale erano partiti Aronnax, Ned Land e Conseil), si tratta di imbarcazioni adatte a quell'epoca; mentre il vero elemento innovativo di tecnologia futurista è rappresentato dal sottomarino Nautilus, in acciaio  e vetro (si poteva vedere il mare anche dalla biblioteca), costruito dal capitano Nemo per sfuggire alla terraferma.

 
"Non c'era dubbio: ci trovavamo sul ponte di una specie di natante sottomarino che, a quanto potevo giudicare, aveva la forma di un immenso pesce d'acciaio" (PARTE PRIMA, CAP.6, PAG.40).
 

 

E' proprio con il Nautilus che i protagonisti navigano sotto al canale di Suez prima della sua apertura ufficiale, avvenuta il 17 novembre 1869:

 

"Sì, proprio questa notte: in pochi minuti, abbiamo superato l'istmo invalicabile che separa il Mar Rosso dal Mediterraneo attraverso un passaggio sottomarino che solo il capitano Nemo conosce" (PARTE SECONDA, CAP.4, PAG.135).

 

Fino ad allora, i primi episodi di guerra sottomarina, condotta con rudimentali battelli mossi a forza di braccia, si ebbero solo nel corso della Guerra di secessione americana.

 

 

The submarine Nautilus

Almost the entire story based on the theme of navigation. For merchant ships, as the American frigate Abraham Lincoln (with which Aronnax, Ned Land and Conseil started), it is suitable for boats in those days; while the real innovative element of futuristic technology is represented by the submarine Nautilus, made of steel and glass (you could see the sea from the library), built by Captain Nemo to escape the mainland.

"We had no time to lose, however. We were lying upon the back of a sort of submarine boat, which appeared (as far as I could judge) like a huge fish of steel" (FIRST PART, CHAPTER 6, PAGE 36).

 

It is just with the Nautilus that the protagonists sail under the Suez Canal before its official opening, which took place on 17th November 1869:

"Yes, this very night;  in a few minutes we have passed this impassable isthmus"..."this low coast which rounds off to the south is the Egyptian coast." (SECOND PART, CHAPTER 4, PAGE 166).

 

Until then, the first episodes of submarine warfare, conducted with rudimentary boats moved by force of arms, there were only during the American Civil War.
