Il fucile ad aria compressa

L'ultimo e significativo aspetto tecnologico, di cui vale la pena parlare, che si cela tra le pagine del racconto e tra le vicende dei protagonisti, è il fucile ad aria compressa. Si tratta ancora una volta di un'arma, inizialmente definita pneumatica, che spara a ripetizione proiettili, propulsi da gas compresso (al posto della polvere da sparo), mediante un motore elettrico che li passa automaticamente.

“Ma... come potrò usare un fucile? - Non è esattamente un fucile con polvere da sparo - rispose il comandante. - E' un fucile ad aria compressa? - Certamente. Come potrei fabbricare della polvere da sparo, a bordo? - Mi sembra, però, che in quella semioscurità, in un elemento liquido, perciò molto più denso dell'atmosfera, i colpi non possano arrivare molto lontano e che difficilmente riescano mortali. - Con questo tipo di fucile tutti i colpi sono mortali e quando un animale è colpito, sia pur leggermente, è fulminato dall'elettricità” (PARTE PRIMA, CAP.14, PAG.88).

“Uno degli uomini del Nautilus mi presentò un semplice fucile il cui calcio, fatto di metallo e vuoto all'interno, era più grande del normale e serviva da serbatoio per l'aria compressa che penetrava nella canna mediante una valvola manovrata da un grilletto. Un serbatoio per i proiettili era scavato nello spessore del calcio e ne conteneva una ventina, naturalmente elettrici, che passavano automaticamente nella canna del fucile: non appena un colpo era stato sparato, ce n'era subito pronto un altro” (PARTE PRIMA, CAP.15, PAG.90).

 

 

The air gun

 

The latest technological and significant aspect, whose worth talking about, that lies between the pages of the story and in the vicissitudes of the protagonists, is the air rifle. It is once again a weapon, initially defined pneumatic, which shoots projectiles repetition, propelled by compressed gas (instead of gunpowder), by an electric motor that will automatically switch them.

“But I repeat, having no powder, I use air under great pressure, which the pumps of the Nautilus furnish abundantly. - But this air must be rapidly used? - Well, have I not my Rouquayrol reservoir, which can furnish it at need? A tap is all that is required. Besides M. Aronnax, you must see yourself that, during our submarine hunt, we can spend but little air and but few balls. - But it seems to me that in this twilight, and in the midst of this fluid, which is very dense compared with the atmosphere, shots could not go far, nor easily prove mortal. - Sir, on the contrary, with this gun every blow is mortal; and, however lightly the animal is touched, it falls as if struck by a thunderbolt” (FIRST PART, CHAPTER 14, PAGE 77).

“One of the Nautilus men gave me a simple gun, the butt end of which, made of steel, hollow in the centre, was rather large. It served as a reservoir for compressed air, which a valve, worked by a spring, allowed to escape into a metal tube. A box of projectiles in a groove in the thickness of the butt end contained about twenty of these electric balls, which, by means of a spring, were forced into the barrel of the gun. As soon as one shot was fired, another was ready” (FIRST PART, CHAPTER 15, PAGE 79).
