Verne volle scrivere un romanzo di divulgazione geografica tramite appunto l'esplorazione del mondo marino. Il viaggio del Nautilus è lungo ed ampio: si spazia dall'Oceano Pacifico all'Oceano Indiano (dal Giappone a Ceylon), i protagonisti  entrano nel Mar Rosso, passano per una galleria immaginaria sotto l'istmo di Suez, attraversano il Mediterraneo, costeggiano il Portogallo; ancora, scendono e  visitano  il “continente sommerso” (Atlantide), doppiano Capo Horn e arrivano al Polo Sud, dove il Capitano Nemo pianta la sua bandiera. Poi risalendo verso il mar dei Sargassi (fra gli arcipelaghi delle Grandi Antille a ovest e le Azzorre a est) e sfiorando le coste norvegesi, un vortice investe infine il Nautilus, inghiottendolo nel sottosuolo terrestre.

Verne wanted to write a novel of geographical dissemination through precisely the exploration of the marine world. The voyage of the Nautilus is long and broad: it ranges from the Pacific Ocean to the Indian Ocean (from Japan to Ceylon), the protagonists enter to the Red Sea, passing through an imaginary gallery below the isthmus of Suez, crossing the Mediterranean, along Portugal; still, they come down and visit the "lost continent" (Atlantis), dub Cape Horn and arrive at the South Pole, where Captain Nemo plant its flag. Then going back to the Sargasso Sea (between the islands of the Greater Antilles in the west and the Azores in the east) and touching the Norwegian coast, at last a vortex invests the Nautilus, swallowing in the Earth's subsurface.
